Arts Commission, Kaptur announce 38th Annual Ninth Congressional
District Invitational High School Art Exhibition
TOLEDO/CLEVELAND, April 5,
2021: The Arts Commission and Congresswoman Marcy
Kaptur are displaying the Ninth Congressional District
Invitational Art Competition to honor artistic excellence
demonstrated by area high school students. Congresswoman Kaptur
has been presenting this opportunity to her district since 1983.
High Schools and student artists in Lucas, Ottawa, Cuyahoga,
Erie, and Lorain counties participated. For the first time in
its history, the exhibition will be virtual. To view the show,

The Congressional First Place Award winner, Norah Li
of Maumee Valley Country Day School will have their artwork,
“Uneaten Pomegranate” displayed in the Capitol Building in
Washington, D.C. for one year.
This year’s Congressional Runner-Up Award winners,
Ireland Bennett, “Jimi Hendrix” of Perkins High School, and
Sadie Tabor, “Goddess” of Lakewood High School will have
their work displayed in Congresswoman Kaptur’s offices.
Additionally, students are
invited to explore the concepts of the “Art to Market”
initiative that highlights commercial art and surface design,
with a separate award given to the artwork deemed most suitable
for commercial design application.
This exhibition is also
made possible through the generous support of: Baldwin Wallace
University, the University of Toledo Department of Art, Bowling
Green State University Department of Art, Lourdes College
Department of Art, American Frame, the Law firm of Eastman and
Smith, Ohio Arts Council, Scribbled Napkin Design, the Law Firm
of Spengler Nathanson, and Toledo.com.
The 2021 jurors include
Deborah Orloff of the University of Toledo, Mille Guld
of Bowling Green State University, Margaret Lockwood-Lass
of Lourdes University, and Toledo-based artist Reem Barakat.
This year’s participating
schools include Brooklyn High School, Cardinal Stritch Catholic
High School, Central Catholic High School, Lakewood High School,
Maumee Valley Country Day School, Notre Dame Academy, Perkins
High School, Rogers High School, Saint Joseph Academy, St.
Edward High School, St. Ursula Academy, Toledo School for the
Arts, and Whitmer High School.
