The Cleveland Museum of Art announces Temporary Closure

CLEVELAND, November 19, 2020: The Cleveland Museum of Art has announced today that it will temporarily close in response to the resolution (2020-143) issued by the Cuyahoga County Board of Health on Wednesday, November 18, advising all residents of Cuyahoga County to stay at home in an effort to slow transmission of the coronavirus.

“In recognition of the Cuyahoga County Board of Health advisory and to ensure the health and safety of both visitors and staff, the Cleveland Museum of Art will close at the end of the day on Thursday, November 19, and reopen once the advisory expires,” said William Griswold, director of the Cleveland Museum of Art. “The museum hopes to open its doors again in mid-December. We plan to retain our current staff throughout the period we are closed and we will continue to offer a full slate of programs online and on social media.”

The museum was previously shuttered from mid-March until June 30. Prior to reopening, it established an internal task force and consulted with a board-certified epidemiologist and peer institutions across the country to establish coronavirus protocols and site-specific safety measures. The CMA will continue to monitor the situation and comply with all guidelines issued by state and local authorities and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Visitors can still engage with the CMA virtually by means of its dynamic, online programming. Titled Home is Where the Art Is, these efforts showcase the museum’s globally recognized digital resources and feature a variety of newly created, fun and engaging programs for people of all ages. With this initiative, the CMA has leveraged the latest technology to bring works of art to a range of audiences, responding to changing needs in new, enriching and innovative ways.

Visit cma.org and follow the museum on social media for the most up-to-date information.
