Message delivered to legislators: ‘Home Is Where the Health Is’

At the Area Office on Aging’s April 29, 2019 Legislative Breakfast, the agency and its partners shined a spotlight on how they are helping older adults live healthy and long lives one home at a time.  Over 200 elected officials, community leaders and organizations serving older adults are joined together at the Area Office on Aging's Legislative Breakfast at Parkway Place in Maumee, Ohio.

Area Office on Aging President/CEO, Billie Johnson said, “The Area Office on Aging and its partners have focused for decades on social determinants of health like nutrition, socialization, economic stability and housing.

“Research shows that these social determinants have a greater impact on an individual’s health and longevity than the healthcare provided at a doctor’s office or hospital or even their own genetics.  Health systems, public officials and others are becoming increasingly aware of this as well.”

A few of the older adults whose health and lives have been positively impacted by the work of the Area Office on Aging and its partners in providing safe, affordable and accessible housing shared their stories in a video that was shown at the event and can be viewed at: www.youtube.com/toledoaging

Included in the video were older adults who were homeless before having a subsidized apartment to call their home.  Edith Coltrane from Toledo also shared her story about how the Area Office on Aging’s home repair program helped improve her life.

After receiving help from the home repair program, Edith said, “I can take showers now and I can wash dishes.  Everything is great now, you know.  It’s not like living in a home where you can’t do things.  I would have to go to my daughter’s house and take a shower, because it was that bad, you know and I feel like I am whole again and I feel great.”

Those in need of housing help can contact the Area Office on Aging at 419-382-0624 or by going to www.AreaOfficeOnAging.com.
