As I write this, nurses from Mercy Health - St. Vincent
Hospital have overwhelmingly voted to go on strike. We have
read the statement from the hospital and we want you to hear
Patient safety is our No. 1 concern,
and when nurses are exhausted patient safety is at risk. Safe
staffing ratios are among the big points of disagreement and I
couldn’t help but notice that the hospital statement made no
mention of them.
We don't want to strike. We want to care for our
patients, our community and ourselves, but management has left
us no choice, and the overwhelming support for the strike among
our members reflects that.
Health care costs are an issue, too.
Hospital officials want to change nurses’ share of healthcare
costs whenever they want – changes that would make it difficult
for nurses and their families to budget.
Expect to hear more details soon from nurses on the front line.
