SW Detroit celebrates holiday season

DETROIT: The Sixth Annual Southwest Holiday Fest takes place from 2 to 6:00PM, Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 at five ‘Cultural Activity Center’ locations throughout Southwest Detroit: W. Vernor Hwy at 21st, W. Vernor Hwy at 25th, Bagley at 24th, W. Vernor Hwy at Central, and Michigan Avenue at Wesson.

The holiday fest features many traditional food and beverage items, vendor tables, giveaways, and more.

“Southwest Detroit is excited to once again host the annual Southwest Holiday Fest, offering families a way to celebrate the holiday season with an interactive entertainment lineup and authentic Latin American cuisine,” said Raymond Lozano, Executive Director of the Mexicantown Community Foundation. “We are grateful for the generous support from our sponsors and hope that the community takes advantage of this opportunity to revel in the holiday spirit, while paying tribute to Hispanic heritage.”

Offerings at the different activity centers include: “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind,” an interactive series of skits; hot cocoa with the Disney movie, “Coco;” Las Posadas - a re-enactment of the journey of Mary and Joseph; a mole sauce and tamale-tasting contest; and youth performances from both the Center of Music & Performing Arts-Southwest (COMPÁS) and Western International High School’s Jazz Ensemble.

The West Vernor & Springwells Business Improvement District is sponsoring a shuttle that will transport festival-goers from location to location throughout the event.
